This elegant colonial building, once a spice warehouse, was built around 1600 in the heart of Galle Fort by a Dutch merchant. More recently it has been converted into a boutique hotel with four air-conditioned bedrooms, each of which — filled with handmade furniture and decked with bright flowers — exudes its own personality.
Life in Fortaleza revolves around its beautiful restaurant and living area with its exposed original coral walls and its shaded courtyard with fresh herb planters, palms and banana trees. There you can relax on the day bed with a honeyed lime juice, tuck into some freshly caught fish, or share one of Fortaleza's signature table barbeques. Popular with weekenders from Colombo searching out delicious food, Fortaleza's chef is one of the best in Sri Lanka. We always use the freshest seasonal produce, grown locally, and we source only the best quality fish and meat.
Staying at Fortaleza will give you the perfect base from which to explore the beautiful town of Galle and the local area, indulge yourself, and eat well.
The four en-suite rooms each have their own personality. All have canopied mosquito nets over comfortable four-poster beds, air conditioning, luxurious white cotton linen, wonderful hand made furniture, books on the history of Galle and bright tropical flowers.
Upstairs, The Master Bedroom, with its 15ft ceilings and lazy day bed, exudes colonial grandeur. This room looks out onto Lighthouse Street and also the main courtyard.
The Library Room is flooded with light from a huge circular window on one side and original bay windows, complete with window seat on the other. Like the Master Bedroom it is on the first flooor, but occupies the corner of the building with windows on all sides.
Downstairs, the two smaller Turquoise Rooms are also light and airy. One looks onto Lighthouse Street through the main columned facade and the other faces Church Cross Street onto the Lighthouse Street veranda.
In addition, Fortaleza operate the Barefoot Annex, a small house with a charming private courtyard just a short stroll from Fortaleza. Next to the Barefoot store in Galle Fort, it is owned by the Sansoni family who own Barefoot and is decorated in their trademark fabrics. It comprises a double AC bedroom upstairs, a sitting room downstairs, which can accommodate one extra person and a small kitchen in the courtyard. With private space, its ideal for longer-staying guests.Add to My Journey
